So far in the series, whenever Laura and Carmilla don’t know what to say to each other, they always just exchange “hey”’s with each other. It’s become their ‘thing’. It sort of made any situation normal, a reassurance for the both of them.
Laura’s reaching out to Carmilla with this “hey”. She’s attempting to make that connection with Carmilla again, and you can just see how much it affects her when Carmilla doesn’t reply with her all too familiar “hey” back.
It seems like such a simple line for Laura to say, but if you think about how often the two have said it to each other to find that reassurance that everything is okay between them, then you can see how desperately Laura is reaching out. How much it breaks her heart that not even this is the same anymore. That reassurance is completely taken away from her and the best she can do in the moment is to try and shake it off and pretend like it didn’t just tear her apart that little bit more.
